The Customs Agency, being the Italian Customs Authority, carries out all the tasks provided for by the National and Community legislation to protect the national and Community budget.

It is entrusted with the verification and collection of customs duties and excise in international trade and the relevant legal disputes, as well as with the management and control of VAT in intra-Community movement of goods. It is also in charge of controls and collection of excise duties on production and consumption.

Moreover, the Italian Customs Agency is responsible for fighting against non-fiscal offences (for the security and safety of citizens) and closely co-operates with E.U. bodies within the framework of the E.U. development and harmonization processes.

The Customs Agency acts in compliance with the principles of legality, impartiality and transparency, applying the criteria of efficiency, cost-effectiveness and efficacy of each administrative action.

The Italian Customs Agency strategies include:

  • developing and strengthening its traditional role of collecting duties


  • strengthening surveillance and control of the movement of goods and travellers at the land borders, in the ports and airports


  • improving antifraud and intelligence activities, in order to combat frauds, also in co-operation with national and international competent bodies developing IT Systems (A.I.D.A, MATRIX, FALSTAFF)


  • developing international relations by co-ordinating the traditional activities of the Agency and fostering training and technical assistance initiatives for the benefit of Member States and Third countries


  • promoting cost-effective actions at national and community level, reducing administrative costs, fostering tax compliance and targeted information exchanges in order to build up a positive and fruitful relationship with operators and professional or trade associations (customer care)


  • fostering best practices through a constant exchange of information with the most advanced European partners, in order to improve operative standards and implement policies aiming at achieving a higher quality of services and procedures.
