
Established on 25 March 1991 by Ministerial Decree, the Second University of Naples has seen a steady and rapid growth of its activities, the number of its students, as well as those Teaching staff and technical staff. Its activity officially started 1 November 1992 with nearly 19.000 students and 8 Faculties.
The “Jean Monnet” Faculty of Political Science - Advanced European and Mediterranean Studies of the Second University of Naples was established after the incorporation in the University of the School for Higher education in European and Mediterranean studies in 2002.
The school, established in 1998 at that time already boasted a co-operation with more than 200 lecturers, coming from both Italian and foreign universities, research centres and public organisations, including top-level managers in Governmental institutions, public officials of judiciary administrations, public officials and managers from regional and local authorities.
The mission of the Jean Monnet faculty and school includes the strengthening of the European Union internal and neighboring policies with a focus on Mediterranean partners by means of graduate and post-graduate education, research & technical assistance projects, also in co-operation with other national and international institutional partners.
As far as the education activity is concerned, the Faculty's aim is to provide students with adequate skills to understand and face complex multicultural dynamics and challenging new scenarios in local development policies, both in the public and private sector, giving students a broad approach to international relations and regional integration processes, with particular reference to the Euro-Mediterranean context.
As far as the research and technical assistance activity is concerned, the Faculty’s aim is to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of the acquis communautaire, as well as supporting its concrete application in acceding and neighboring countries with specific reference to the field of cultural, social and economic integration, democratisation and civil rights.
The Faculty’s vision of both education and research and technical assistance activities emphasizes innovation, internationalization and interdisciplinary approaches. With its specific focus on European and Mediterranean integration, the Faculty gives specific emphasis to advanced studies in international affairs, supporting the goals of the European Union “Jean Monnet” Action and in co-ordination with international exchange programs for both students and academics.
To this end, the Faculty is both partner and in many cases host organisation of international seminars, conferences, workshops, knowledge networks and working groups financed and/or organised within the framework of EU programmes.
The “Jean Monnet” Faculty currently enrolls over 25000 students and around 50 professors among full, associate and junior associate professors. It also maintains structured relations and co-operation with professionals and official from the public and private sector in the field of political studies and European integration process.
